Build in Reflection From Start to Finish

"We do not learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience."

John Dewey

Remember the Essential Design Elements for Gold Standard PBL that you explored in Module 1? Every element is important to help students reach learning goals. As you get ready to implement PBL, don’t overlook the critical role of reflection. It’s too often left to the end—or even skipped if time runs short. (For Gold Standard PBL, reflection is just as important for teachers as it is for students!)

Using digital tools can help you plan for student reflection from start to finish of a project, encouraging students to set goals, cement their understanding, identify challenges, and celebrate growth. What’s more, technology can add novelty so that reflection doesn’t feel like a chore.
